The Shaker Kitchen: Over 100 Recipes from Canterbury Shaker Village
Published in Hardcover by Clarkson N. Potter (April, 1994)
Author: Jeffrey S. Paige
Average review score:

food for the soul
This is the best, the easiest, the tastiest way to re-create your grandmother's cooking. Simple directions and easily-found ingredients plus appetizing-looking pictures of the food get you going. Preparation and cooking times are included.

We have been to the Shaker Village in Canterbury, eaten at their candlelit dinners - and then I have come home and followed the recipe in the book for what I ate the night before - and it both looked as good and tasted as delicious as when their chef prepared it.

This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks.

A Shaker Sister's Drawings: Wild Plants Illustrated by Cora Helena Sarle
Published in Hardcover by The Monacelli Press (April, 1997)
Authors: Cora Helena Sarle, June Sprigg Tooley, and Helena S. Cora
Average review score:

A Shaker Sisterês vision on plants
Maybe the Shakerês visions of the "spiritual world" shaped Sister Sarleês perception of the "natural world" and therefore influenced her nice, simple, stylized drawings. On stressing the straight stalks and the symmetry of every plant she captures the essence of each species. I like the a little bit naive-looking illustrations very much because of their honesty and purity. The plants are well-arranged on every page, with a certain economy of layout, which fits into the Shaker-philosophy. I think in some way Sister Helenaês spirit lives on in these prettily-drawn illustrations that can please both- flower lovers and botanists.

Sisters of Fortune: Being the True Story of How Three Motherless Sisters Saved Their Home in New England and Raised Their Younger Brother While Thei
Published in Hardcover by University Press of New England (September, 1993)
Authors: Nancy Coffey Heffernan and Ann Page Stecker
Average review score:

History That Reads Like a Novel
Sisters of Fortune is a biography of a family during the Civil War era. It reads like a novel. Three sisters who live in a small town in New Hampshire, left by their fortune-seeking father, try to maintain their upper-middle class life style on the little money he sends them while they fall in and out of love, have their hearts broken, and finally marry. The sisters write wonderful letters to their father telling him of their loves, travels, parties, friends, relations, neighbors, domestic affairs, money worries, etc. and begging him to come home. When the eldest daughter Lizzie marries and moves to New York, the younger daughters, Annie and Charlotte spend winters with her there and launch themselves in a round of parties and social events. Since their father had been a Congressman, they know and write about many of the famous men of the day--for example, Daniel Webster was a family friend. They write about the the slavery debates, the coming of the Civil War, and the growth of New York City as well as their own private affairs. A touching and charming book.

Stay Tuned
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (April, 1991)
Author: Barbara Corcoran
Average review score:

Very interesting!
The author's style and language are right for the young adult audience it is intended for. I especially like the way the author switches the point of view between Stevie and Eddie without confusing the reader. I think that this is a very effective way to make the book more interesting. Throughout the book, unexpected things happen. It creates a very suspenseful mood. One minute Stevie, Eddie and Fawn are at the train station and the next minute they are in New Hampshire. I never know what is going to happen and I like that. My favorite part is when the kids meet Alex, a teenager who helps them out by taking them to New Hampshire and leting them stay with him.

Tight Lines: The Best Trout and Bass Fishing in Massachusetts & New Hampshire
Published in Paperback by AnEx Publications (August, 2001)
Author: Roger Aziz
Average review score:

Great Fishing in MA & NH
Thank you, Roger Aziz for this great book! I've tried three of the Massachusetts locations and 5 NH spots recommended in "Tight Lines" and I caught my limit every time! Roger Aziz removes all of the mystery surrounding fly-fishing. He presents his techniques in a straightforward and easy to understand manner. I've sent copies of Tight Lines to friends in California, Florida and Montana because the flies, tips and fishing methods that Mr. Aziz teaches here can be successfully employed anywhere in the world where trout or bass are found.

Upon This Granite: Catholicism in New Hampshire, 1647-1997
Published in Hardcover by Peter Randall Publisher (November, 1998)
Author: Wilfrid H. Paradis
Average review score:

The answer to a mystery: what did the Church do and why?
Ever wondered why the Catholic Church behaves the way it does? This History is a well written, entertaining, enlightened answer by one of the Church's cognoscenti. Yes, it is a history of the Catholic Church in New Hampshire, but it is more than a history. It is an engaging detective story that reveals the answer to why the Church did that or this. Moreover,it outlines a text book case of how not to run a railroad, or a church for that matter. I like the work well enough to buy five or six copies for the benifit of my more thoughtful friends.

Waterfalls of the White Mountains: 30 Hikes to 100 Waterfalls
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (January, 2003)
Authors: Bruce R. Bolnick, Doreen Bolnick, Daniel Bolnick, Bolnick, Robert Kozlow, Bruce Bolnick, and Daniel
Average review score:

Take a hiking honeymoon with this book!
This book inspired one of the best vacations I've taken (while closest to home!)exploring the waterfalls of NH. The directions and descriptions are accurate and easy to follow, and the falls themselves are exquisite--even in dry August weather, when we saw them. This will be a gift to friends, to be sure. Experienced hikers will appreciate it, but it's suitable for beginners. Not many geriatric hikes, however.
